My neurodiversity story
I wanted to share a piece of my self-discovery journey into the realm of neurodiversity. It has become more common to read stories about people receiving late diagnoses of neurodiverse conditions, be it ADHD or autism. But I’ve not really come across anyone telling their story of not quite meeting the mark for a diagnosis at the end of an assessment.
This was my experience.
I was told that I did not “meet clinical threshold” (according to the current DSM-5 criteria). I found this “non-diagnosis” quite challenging to navigate and make sense of in my mind. I also discovered that the criteria for diagnosis appears to differ in interpretation, depending on which psychologist/psychiatrist you talk to, not to mention the assessment process itself, which also appears to widely differ.
